The following information about carbohydrates and their importance may be of interest to you.

Carbohydrates are one of the crucial dietary sources of energy that support the brain, enable muscular contractions, and provide the fuel necessary for a young child’s rapid growth, especially through 24-months of age. Each gram of carbohydrate provides 4 Calories. So it is important for a child to get appropriate amounts of carbohydrates each day from good food sources. Carbohydrates are sometimes simply called sugars or starches. They are classified scientifically as monosaccharides, disaccharides, or polysaccharides.

Because organic brown rice syrup contains complex carbohydrates, it is more slowly digested and absorbed by the body. Also to accommodate children who may have lactose intolerance, especially after a gastrointestinal illness, we chose to use organic brown rice syrup in Baby’s Only Organic® Formulas. We selected organic brown rice syrup versus other carbohydrates such as sucrose (table sugar) or corn syrup because rice is one of the first solid foods fed to a baby. Rice is gluten free and is considered hypoallergenic because it is the least allergenic of all the grains so there is no concern over its use as it is easily tolerated.

Baby’s Only Organic®Premium, Premium with DHA, and Gentle with Whey Protein, contains 10.8 grams of carbohydrate per 100 Calories and our Sensitive with DHA formula contains 10.7 grams of carbohydrate per 100 calories. All of the formulas contain an appropriate amount of carbohydrates for a young child.
