Why did Nature’s One choose Organic Lactose as the only carbohydrate source in Baby’s Only Organic Gentle Dairy with Whey Protein formula?

The primary carbohydrate in breast milk is lactose and Nature’s One® received consumer requests for an organic formula with a carbohydrate content similar to breast milk, especially when transitioning from breast milk to formula. The carbohydrate source in Baby’s Only Organic® Gentle Dairy with Whey Protein Formula  is 100% organic lactose. The carbohydrate sources in Baby’s Only Organic ® Dairy Formula consist of approximately 35% naturally occurring lactose which is brought into the formula with the organic non-fat dried cow’s milk and 65% added organic brown rice syrup.

Protein:

The protein source in Baby’s Only Organic® Gentle Dairy with Whey Protein Formula is organic whey protein and organic non-fat dried cow’s milk whereas the protein source in Baby’s Only Organic® Premium Dairy Formula is solely organic non-fat dried cow’s milk. The whey to casein ratio of Baby’s Only Organic® Gentle Dairy with Whey Protein formula is 60:40.

Non-fat cow’s milk has been used for decades in formulas. These formulas, such as Baby’s Only Organic® Premium Dairy, Premium Dairy with DHA & ARA and Sensitive formulas, have a whey to casein ratio of 18:82 and have been clinically researched to document their safety and nutritional adequacy in supporting a child’s growth and development. These formulas are known as casein-predominant formulas. Because of research documenting the unique components and benefits of human milk, the thinking was that the addition of whey to formula to achieve a whey to casein ratio of 60:40 would be beneficial. After all, if this is the ratio in mother’s milk, why not formula? The formula industry has introduced some formulas containing this 60:40 ratio and these formulas are referred to as whey-predominant formulas.

Both formulas such as Baby’s Only Organic® Premium Dairy Formula or Baby’s Only Organic® Premium Dairy with DHA Formula and whey-predominant formulas such as Baby’s Only Organic® Gentle Dairy with Whey Protein Formula are nutritious and healthy formulas to support a child’s growth and development.

DHA & ARA Fatty Acids:

Baby’s Only Organic® Gentle Dairy with Whey Protein Formula does not contain added DHA and ARA in the formula but does contain sufficient amounts of linoleic and linolenic fatty acids. Linoleic and linolenic acid are essential fatty acids and precursor fats from which DHA and ARA are made in the body. This means that full-term, healthy babies, children, and adults can make DHA and ARA in the body from linoleic and linolenic fatty acids.

Babies and young children need different types of healthy fat for growth and development. Vegetable oils in formula are a source of fat. Baby’s Only Organic Gentle Dairy with Whey Protein Formula contains a blend of three organic vegetable oils: Organic High Oleic Sunflower and/or Safflower Oil, Organic Soybean Oil and Organic Coconut Oil. The vegetable oils are expeller pressed, which is a squeezing process to extract the oil from the organic plants. No harsh chemicals are used to produce the vegetable oils in Baby’s Only Organic Formulas.

There are some organic and conventional formulas that contain palm oil or palm olein oil. (Palm olein oil is made from palm oil.) Palm olein oil as a predominant fat source in some formulas has been shown to cause decreased calcium and fat absorption which can result in both lower bone mineralization and harder stool formation or constipation.1, 2, 3 Baby’s Only Organic Formulas do not contain palm oil or palm olein oil.

Almost 90% of all palm oil is produced in Indonesia and Malaysia at oil-palm plantations. This has resulted in widespread deforestation, destruction of rain forests, and putting the survival of some animals at risk. The razing by burning of tropical rain forests to make way for oil-palm plantations also results in the release of large amounts of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.4
