Why did Nature’s One choose Organic Lactose as an only carbohydrate source in Baby’s Only Organic Whey Protein Dairy formula?

The primary carbohydrate in breast milk is lactose and Nature’s One® has received consumer requests for an organic formula with a carbohydrate content similar to breast milk, especially when transitioning from breast milk to formula. Nature’s One® is now offering our Baby’s Only Organic® Whey Protein Dairy Formula with organic lactose as the only carbohydrate source as an option for parents.

The carbohydrate source in Baby’s Only Organic ® Whey Protein Dairy Formula is 100% organic lactose. The carbohydrate sources in Baby’s Only Organic ® Dairy Formula consist of approximately 35% naturally occurring lactose which is brought into the formula with the organic non-fat dried cow’s milk and 65% added organic brown rice syrup.

Protein:

The protein source in Baby’s Only Organic ® Whey Protein Dairy Formula is organic whey powder and organic non-fat dried cow’s milk whereas the protein source in Baby’s Only Organic® Dairy Formula is solely organic non-fat dried cow’s milk. The whey to casein ratio of Baby’s Only Organic® Whey Protein Dairy formula is 60:40.

Non-fat cow’s milk has been used for decades in formulas. These formulas, such as Baby’s Only Organic® Dairy, Dairy with DHA & ARA and LactoRelief formulas, have had a whey to casein ratio of 18:82 and have been clinically researched to document their safety and nutritional adequacy in supporting a child’s growth and development. These formulas are known as casein-predominant formulas. Because of research documenting the unique components and benefits of human milk, the thinking was that the addition of whey to formula to achieve a whey to casein ratio of 60:40 would be beneficial. After all, if this is the ratio in mother’s milk, why not formula? The formula industry has introduced some formulas containing this 60:40 ratio and these formulas are referred to as whey-predominant formulas.

Both formulas such as Baby’s Only Organic® Dairy Formula or Baby’s Only Organic® Dairy with DHA Formula and whey-predominant formulas such as Baby’s Only Organic® Whey Protein Dairy Formula are nutritious and healthy formulas to support a child’s growth and development.

DHA & ARA Fatty Acids:

Baby’s Only Organic® Whey Protein Dairy Formula does not contain added DHA and ARA in the formula but does contain sufficient amounts of linoleic and linolenic fatty acids. Linoleic and linolenic acid are essential fatty acids and precursor fats from which DHA and ARA are made in the body. This means that full-term, healthy babies, children, and adults can make DHA and ARA in the body from linoleic and linolenic fatty acids.

Linoleic acid (LA) and linolenic acid (ALA) are essential fats. They are considered “essential” because the body cannot make them and they must be provided by the foods we eat. LA and ALA are also considered precursor fats because the body uses these fats to make the nonessential fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA). Formulas contain LA and ALA because they are necessary for the growth and development of cells, especially in the brain, nerve and eye tissues.

The organic oils used in Baby’s Only Organic formula assure the appropriate amounts of LA and ALA. These organic oils include high oleic sunflower or safflower oil, soybean oil, and coconut oil.

Nucleotides

Baby's Only Organic® Dairy Formulas contain naturally occurring nucleotides found in organic dairy protein. Nature's One® believes this is adequate to meet the growth and development needs of children. These organic nucleotides are not declared on Baby's Only Organic's label because they are not ingredients - instead they occur naturally as mentioned.

Nutritional science and the medical community have not determined if there are any added benefits for added nucleotides - especially since all are synthetically derived. The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition weighs-in on this subject as well commenting that "...additional studies are needed to understand the mechanism of action, confirm clinical endpoints, and monitor the long-term effects of adding nucleotides to baby formula." 1

Most importantly, nucleotides added to conventional and organic formulas are derived by synthetic, non-organic methods. There are presently no organic or natural sources for nucleotides. We are therefore concerned about the harmful effects of the chemicals used to process nucleotides and the synthetic source of nucleotides; especially since the benefits of their addition have not been clearly demonstrated.

 Selenium & Iron

Baby's Only Organic® Whey Protein Dairy formula contains selenium and iron, similar to conventional formulas.

Selenium is a mineral important for proper formation of red blood cells, development of skeletal muscle and proper growth. Selenium, too, is normally present in breast milk, but lacking in cow and soy milks. Baby's Only Organic® contains added taurine and selenium.

Iron is added at the level recommended by the Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition. Inappropriate dietary iron could result in anemia, weakness, muscle fatigue, abnormal gastrointestinal motility, and a reduction of cognitive ability. This reduction in cognition has been shown to be irreversible, even once a normal iron level is retained.

Organic High Oleic Sunflower and/or Safflower Oil, Organic Soybean Oil &
Organic Coconut Oil

Babies and young children need different types of healthy fat for growth and development. Vegetable oils in formula are a source of fat. Baby’s Only Organic Formulas contain a blend of three organic vegetable oils: Organic High Oleic Sunflower and/or Safflower Oil, Organic Soybean Oil and Organic Coconut Oil. The vegetable oils are expeller pressed, which is a squeezing process to extract the oil from the organic plants. No harsh chemicals are used to produce the vegetable oils in Baby’s Only Organic Formulas.

There are some organic and conventional formulas that contain palm oil or palm olein oil. (Palm olein oil is made from palm oil.) Palm olein oil as a predominant fat source in some formulas has been shown to cause decreased calcium and fat absorption which can result in both lower bone mineralization and harder stool formation or constipation.1, 2, 3 Baby’s Only Organic Formulas do not contain palm oil or palm olein oil.

Almost 90% of all palm oil is produced in Indonesia and Malaysia at oil-palm plantations. This has resulted in widespread deforestation, destruction of rain forests, and putting the survival of some animals at risk. The razing by burning of tropical rain forests to make way for oil-palm plantations also results in the release of large amounts of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.4
