Under the guidance of a healthcare professional, Baby's Only Organic® formula and PediaSmart® can be used as a tube feeding. The specific amount to be used daily will need to be determined based upon a child’s nutritional and medical status. Also, mixing directions should be discussed to assure that the product is prepared and fed safely and properly. Baby's Only Organic® and PediaSmart® formulas are not for parenteral use.
There are specific precautions to consider for tube feedings with Baby's Only Organic® and PediaSmart® formulas:
•Unlike ready-to-feed products, powdered formulas are not sterile. Therefore, mixing Baby's Only Organic® and PediaSmart® formulas should be done with great care regarding cleanliness and sterility of all measuring and mixing equipment to avoid any contamination.
•To prevent tube clogging, the mixing instructions for Baby's Only Organic® and PediaSmart® formulas suggest use of a whisk or blender to ensure that all of the powder is dissolved in the water. If the product is not fed immediately, some separation may be noted especially if the hang time is up to 4 hours. Shake the container or tube feeding bag and the ingredients will readily go back into solution. This separation is due to the use of organic ingredients without the use of stabilizers.
•The recommended hang time for powder formulations, such as Baby's Only Organic® and PediaSmart® formulas, is no longer than 4 hours.
•Use of sterile water to prepare the Baby's Only Organic® and PediaSmart® formulas for tube feeding purposes is recommended.
•PediaSmart® beverages are not isotonic and may require starting with a slow drip and may require attention to tolerance and monitoring of metabolic status.
