The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests beginning to feed infant cereals or other solid foods when a child is developmentally ready. This may be around six months of age. The child should be able to sit alone or in a supported chair, hold up their head with good control, move food from a spoon into their throat (instead of pushing food back out of their tongue/mouth), and have a general interest in eating. They are also usually about double their birth weight (and about 13 pounds or more), before they are ready to begin solid foods.(1)
